Scam Artists

Unfortunately, as fantastic as it is being able to work from home and keep everything ticking during the pandemic, we have also seen a huge rise in scammers trying to extort people in various ways, here are two examples that we have seen:

‘Microsoft’ Calling

We have seen multiple instances of users receiving calls from someone claiming to work for Microsoft. Usually with a story about the user’s PC being flagged for having errors and the Microsoft engineer needs to access your PC to help fix them. Microsoft will NEVER call you and offer to do this for you. Letting anyone access your PC remotely that you do not know and trust can lead to loss of data or even potentially having your PC held to ransom.
Please bear in mind, this scam isn’t exclusive to people calling from ‘Microsoft’, we have also seen people claiming to be from BT for example.

WhatsApp/Text Messages

We have also seen a few cases of people’s mobile phones being contacted pretending to be their boss via text message, asking for bank transfers to be made or Gift cards to be purchased. If you receive a message from an unknown number claiming to be someone you know, always check with that person that they definitely sent that message.

The key to all of this is to educate the workforce and be vigilant……
